mangalore

notice: this computer has restrictions which dont allow me
to copy pictures from the internet to here
so its another strictly TEXT blog from me!

We reached mangalore today after a hectic cycle
on a road where all highway codes and laws
such as the 'right of way' and 'speed limit'
and 'undertaking and overtaking guidelines'
are unheard of or ignored.
horrific conditions for cyclists but unfortunately
this was the best route, the 'National Highway 17'.

so here we are safe, and in a gloomy hotel as is typical of
Karnataka, which has so far been my least favourite state.
weve had an attempted break in on one of our hotel rooms,
many sleazy men approaching us , suspiscious hoverings
around our bikes, coakroach , grasshopper, common fly
and soldier ant infested rooms and unnerving roads.
there is also little to see here on the Coastal roads,
appart from 'The Tallest Shiva statue in the World'
whch was stunning, and the JOGG falls which we had to take a
rickety (this term is used loosely it was closer to a roller coaster
ride in a vehicle with square wheels ).
the falls were dissapointing and looked a very fabricated 'natural waterfall'.

on the way back a shady looking taxi driver told us there were no buses
home to Honnovar ... very suspicious and convienient for him i thought...
he said he was our only hope of returning that evening, with a hefty fee (1000 ruppees)
he offered to take us home, just as the 40 rupee (about 50pence)bus was pulling in!!!!!
we are very wary of these crooked 'took took ' (phonetic spelling) men now.
green island.
back in Poalem i had a near death encounter (ott) with a ridiculously
placed 'fishing net' i dont know if this was conidered when the tourist beach was set up, but swimmers going further than 50 meters out would be face to face with this monstrosity wrapped round the edges of thier front crawl. i luckily escaped with only a few rope burns in the struggle
but because of that net which sneaky kira managed to avoid (where was she at 4am that morning......) i came last in our race back from Green Island.

The snake.

on the road to Udipi we saw a huge headless but still wriggling snake, which curiously none of the truck drivers would run over (obvioulsy excluding the original snake murderer) , eventually when a vast crowd
had gathered and a large pile up of truckers serrenading the snake with carhorn music could be heard , a young laddie (narrative has taken an irish twist) jumped down from the roof armed with stick and flung the
snake to the grass. hoorah.
kiras has attained 'maths puzzles for pleasure'... i dont know what to make of this.

panaji..

Goa we have found, is not as lively as its reputation. Thanks to the anti noise after
10pm law.
We are not going to stay as long as we had anticipated, instead we
are heading down the coast tomorrow due to a distinct lack of cultural draws.
After watching a modern bollywood film today i was very shocked by the
sexist content, all the women are dressed in extreemly tarty clothes
and shout wildly through out, whilst the men are dressed in 'jack the lad' style
english clothes, they all look incredibly unattractive and come accross as
vacuous playthings. The story line seemed to involve (it was in Hindi)
a man marrying four different women and trying to keep them seperate
while they moved around the same house scantily dressed, he
spent most of his time falling over chairs. I found it boardering on the offensive and it did not
reflect the culture i have witnessed at all. Even the 'BOLLYWOOD CAPITAL'
Mumbai was very tame, i don't remember seeing the local indian women dressed like
hookers on the streets, or men with a flock of these women falling at thier feet,
if i was a feminist viewer i would be outraged, especially in a country that has such strong
religious and social values.
this kind of whore inspired dress code and mass cheating would be inappropriate
on any film screen in any country and seemed to make no moral points about avoiding it as at the
end he is taken back by his first wife. men seem to be praised for thier activities
especially noticeable when the credits roll, a music video involving gyrating female dancers
and the two male stars as they cavort amoungst a sea of almost naked heavily made up women.

As a westener travelling through i have applied the dress codes to my wardrobe
and followed the strict social policies, being saturated in this culture i have become
more aware of the implications and after one month i found this film offencive so i wonder
how the locals must react to these belittleing displays of gratuitous body flashing and male superiority.

on a lighter note .... its still roasting hot.

Vagator beach

burnt feet....
in an act of pure TEAM i shed my shoes
as kira's had broken and we trecked amoung the searing
sand, gravel, thorny grass and jagged rocks .

Kira no shoes's blog covers the rest of the day....
so i'l
add this pretty poem i found in a magazine
' butterflies sailing out to cross the sea
have dissapeared'

this was the entire piece. i liked it.... so many possible meanings....
im looking forward to the new route
the bikes are chained up
and by a stroke of luck positioned next to a fierce
chained up dog so no oppertunists will approach unless
totally nuts.

route

for those die hard fans
this is the exact route down the coast weve done so far!!!

day one Mumbai- Alibag
day two Alibag to Murud
day three Murud to Srivardhan
day four Srivardhan to Kelshi
day five Kelshi to Depoli
day six Depoli to Guhagar
day seven Guhagar to Ganpatipule
day eight Ganpatipule to Ratnigiri

these days have been hilly and snakey!
very hot and a total contrast to the smooth riverside european rodes!

ratnigiri

we are stopping here on the way to goa.
the route from mumbai to ratnigiri has been incredibly diverse in surroundings.
somtimes mountainous somtimes green somtimes red soil, tarmac or pebbles
but always reallllllllllly hilly and always stifflingly hot.
which makes for a tricky and tough cycle. concentration is vital as
falling down in these conditions is not a tempting option, if on the downhill.
the locals are always suprised to see us and the white feeling is apparent.
somtimes u look in the morror and expect a darker face !
the peoples are very mixed in appearence and the clothing either very ragged , mismatched
and torn or neon bright and tacky or stunning and rich. there seems too be no middle ground.

we are eating mainly thali, a tasty vegetarian south indian dish consisting of several
mini dishes and chipatti to roll the sauces up in. mango is delicious and although
the season is over we buy it in tins!
its a shame its too dangerous to eat fresh unpeeled fruit otherwise i would be relishing the flavours all the time, i love fruit!
we take caution not to drink the water or eat any dairy products.

i will bring the map next time to put down some stats!

grim reeper

once upon a time in ganpatipule a cyclist
branched off from her tribe to ask a local man
the path to choose .
the local man was in truth a dark force ...
he yeilded a large blade in one deadly hand
and stole my map with the other
the eyes of this man were ferocious and grey
they struck a fear in me........
as i turned to leave with no direction the
man held his knife threateningly
and swept it through the air
his stormy eyes bulging terror
we cycled away very very fast to escape him.
kira did not delegate the task to me again.

we reached the town safely
this is the first working internet for days.

hills and heat, mystical men, monkeys, rocky paths,
wrong turns (4 me- see below),changing and
striking scenary and many mosquito bites.

6 k's into the journey yesterday morning
i was into a really steady rythem ...
i was in the lead and feeling the pace increase
at every turn... until i realised i was on my own
looking back i didnt see the others.....
so i waited by a tree.... begining to wonder where they
were.... then samual arrived on the back of a motor bike
he said i had taken the wrong road and was too fast to catch!
7k's out!!!!!!
too fast!!!!!!

we have maintained a very good pace and
are on schedule for reaching goa.
also the Hindu festival Diwali will
commence soon which will be an exciting experience
to witness.
we remain the only westeners around.
it feels as though it could be the 1920's or
earlier and we are adventurers crossing the globe in
search of rare species of monkey or butterfly!

1 peddle

the amazing surroundings, excitment, heat, speed
and then one peddle.....

it was a nightmare
cycling in the dark for countless miles with only one peddle
my bike was faulty
and had a flat back tyre also.

it is like a jungle here
beautiful but the heat is incredible 35 degrees or higher somtimes
the hills are immense but this is the best part of the
trip so far.
i got my bike fixed for about 1 pound twenty.... which was great!
so it has a new peddle arm... a black non thorn one!
there is a lot of wildlife it feels like a safari somtimes!
i have to go now
i am meeting the team in 5

hello!
i think this must be one of the worst places not to have a camera!
i will hopefully get a new one soon....
id love to put some amazing photos up for you.

we will be leaving tomorrow to start the trip down to goa.
im very exciting about seeing less city and more beach.

in the hanging gardens (containing nothing hanging
but named hanging because it is positioned on top of a cliff
and appears to be on the verge)
i encountered a WILD MONKEY
it was incredible
i got very close to it and i was lucky to come away unharmed.
it looked like this one <---

mumbai

stunning and rugged..... mumbai.
we have looked so far at the prince of wales museum, which was fascinating,
we had a tape to accompany us! "look at this ...yeees it is reeeel just loooook
at the beautiful lace carvings in that ivory, yes and here we are now face to face with
Ganesha (picture left), ill meet you in the next room at number 32" he was great! so enthusiastic
not what you expect from being used to the usual museum monologue....

some interesting things i learnt from the museum was the trinity of the Hindu gods
firstly Brahma 'Brahma is the source, the seed and the creator of all beings in this world. At the time of creation, he emerged as the first differentiated consciousness (the first ego) from the primal waters (universal consciousness). He is called syambhu because in reality none created him. He created himself.'
OH NO I HAVE RUN OUT OF TIME!!!!
Vishnu _the preserver and
Shiva - the destroyer are the more celebrated gods as Brahma only featured in the initial stages. all three pictured left.

mumbai is schoorchio, and respecting the local dress code ... long sleeved
and long legged at all times even in 28-35 degrees is tiring, so hot
its overpowering. we are going to make like seamstresses and fashion some
ultra light weight apparell... all weather cycling trakies do not do the trick in this
climate i have found.... they are sticking to my legs right now!

we arrived very early and it was an instant relaunch into a new and different
atmosphere after the universally non descript surroundings of the plane.
i have to go now

TÜRKEYÖÖÖ.

here u see kıra' blending in' at the BLUE MOSQUE ......

today i was seated opposite the chıef of polıce.
after much sıgnıng and elaborate jest we communıcated enough to
complete the forms......
ınternatıonal trade fraud
ı was let off... usıng my connectıons wıth Red ın the budapest mafıa....

no not really,
ı was there to report my stolen camera.
ıt happened yesterday, after ı took these pıctures and had them put onto dısk,
luckıly.
here ıs one ı took of the blue mosque A.K.A 'Süleymaniye Mosque'

almost proffesıonal really..... why couldnt the thıef have targeted someone less passıonate about photography. dıdnt steal my vıdeo camera though.... yey!

here ıs one of a prettttttty buıldıng typıcal of the turkısh back streets....( although not tradıtıonally buılt sıdeways.... more lıke thıs...see below)

and a suspıcıous lookıng begger hıdıng round the corner.... who keeps hasslıng me.

she ıs very attractıve so ı paıd her about 17p to take a close up....

so the polıce epısode......

he saıd 'ı am chıef of polıc (how ıts spelt ın turkısh) ı don't deal wıth these

small thıngs normally but you are specıal geeeerl'

ıt was chaos , the fılıng system was a draw ın hıs desk.....

all the offıcers contınued to access thıs throughout the ıntervıew.....

each one rufflıng through the papers and dısturbıng the 'order',

ıt was bızzare.... and each one stealıng each others cıggarettes when they left the room!

also sponsered by Marlboro... very sneaky , get to the authorıtıes! polıce smoke only the fınest.

the statement was taken down on a prepared text, changıng only my name and the ıtem stolen,

but ıt took 45 mınutes to change these detaıls.....

eventually he gave me a pıece of typed paper and sıgned ıt.....

ıt looks very fake!!

here are some more pretty pıctures!!!

oh no there is no drıve......

earlıer ın the week kıra negotıated an apartment for a month..... hour trek up the hill

kıra then turned her deft hand to negotıatıng ınternet prıces
actually hagglıng the prıce up from two to three lıre.

but today we are goıng to see the Spoonmaker's Diamond, kept in The Topkapi Palace, the world's fifth biggest diamond. It got its name when someone found it on a rubbish heap, thought it was a fake, and swapped it for three spoons.

magıc spoons?
jack had better luck wıth hıs beans ı thınk.....
beans (wıth V.I.P access to gıants treasures vıa collapsable bean stalk) for a cow.... spoons for a dıamond.... hmmmm not so clever these turks....

kıra has totally lost all navıgatıon skılls.....
so goıng through turkey should be ınterestıng!!!!
and we have unfortunately mıssed the 'camel wrestlıng' that goes on ın the mıddle durıng aprıl... shame.

Im goıng to look ınto Turkısh sıghts whıle kıra looks ınto Iranıan Vısa's

back once again with the renegade master d4 damageerrrrrrr

adventures of k! return to Athens....
where i returned to the pet shop of open cages with my team leader and
a new addition had entered, a baby monkey. STRIKING with fur like feathers,
i am hoping to find one in Sri Lanka to keep, it was very clever and i was not allowed to pick it up....
over all Greek people seem to be unfriendly and rude, but occasionally super nice.
I saw all the exciting sights last time i was here, it's very hot, i have sadly let go of
my 2 pound ragged trade mark flip flops, they fully broke in corfu, in a sand attack on the
weak bamboo replica strands holding them together, gashed and ruined i layed them to rest
outside my boyfriends front door (he was not as taken with this as i was), they are probably
gone now.
corfu was fun, a mix up of events, kira and i were guest DJ's at a bar owned by Tak-tak-takis
where we mixed some hard house to an eager crowd and we both got on the mic, MC debut... absolutely firin'!!!!!
kira has included a picture of me in her diary which u can ENLARGE by clicking on it!!!! but this was not the main event with dangerous takis!(too much fun to be taking photo's!) this was in another bar!

we are currently researching routes to Istanbul.
the route here was hectic! with our special diversion via Venice made possible
by the notoriuos 'red' and his partner in crime eszti . We had a fantastic time with our
visiting team members, and learnt a wise slogan from Red himself (we believe he may be linked to a crime ring backed by the budapest mafia, he shared several brutal accounts of flawless fighting in a low smokey growl), 'if it's not fun don't do it'.... unfortunately we could not apply this to the torturous road to Athens, near death, crossing the train tracks was the most frightening and the luckiset experience so far on this trip. with a total of 6 seconds to cross with loaded bike and no warning of train approaching we escaped by a few split seconds.

Venice however was very calm and the water slicing up the roads was so surreal, floaty flat land
it seemed like a childs idea of a town put into action by a wayward king for fun. I want to return there as soon as i can.

so long........

adventures of k

im in Athens,,,, i walk alone, teamless and bikeless.... and mapless....
i took a quick excursion to greece,,,, and had one of the best few days of my life!

im flying to budapest tonight. p.s ANYONE with an inkling to fly from Budapest to Corfu
be warned,,,, its a path of mayhem, if u dont fall from exhaustion after full days searching for flights in a fanless internet inferno, u may develope narcoleptic tendensies after waiting sleepless for twelve hours of flights,,,, there was also a boat and bus version adding an extra 18 hours of travel for those who have become twistedly excited by this descrition... (plane and bus spotting enthusiasts, people with airport fetishes , people who enjoy stultifying extended masses of time in a glass and shiny floored temple) start booking it now!

im very impressed by Athens.... i have been walking around all day after waking up in the hotel room i strikingly haggled down to 30 euros from 105..... persuaion .... at one thirty in the morning.... i was determined to get it.... (yes i did use my 'strictly proffesional' hypnotism skills,,,, but i only made him eat one reservation log book.,..,.,., for amusement.... there was no t.v in the room.)

i have so far walked (in flip flops that origionaly cost two pounds, 4 months old, broken and mended with gaffa tape that leaves unsightly black marks on my feet -iv got that traveller feeling down to the max) for 7 hours , and seen, the Akropolis, Hadrians Arch, Temple of olympian Zeus - my favourite, Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Hadrians library and the Temple of the winds.
The entire time i have been calculating how long each trip would have taken on my bike! it changes your attitude to any distance related activities!

all using my out of date Reading University studeNt card, free entry yey! but i spent my last 30 euros on a hotel so .... its lucky im too excited to be hungry today.... i am meeting my team... (consisting of KirAno,,, and the hangers on.... micky d, jonny, all those guys!- a good team makes a trip....)
at 8.30 tonight- reunion !

by far the most shocking thing i have seen today is the stupidity of the pet shop keeper,,,,
here was the scenario:
nicley dressed apart from hideous flip flops girl enters shop.
shop keeper notices extremity of the grin on her face.
shop keeper notices demonic bulging of her eyes and extending of her hands
shop keeper smiles nervously, he sees it every day,,,, a little overexcited by the animals its what keeps him going to work in the morning, nice to give somthing back etc...
shop keeper is perplexed by discrepancies in the stock sales and orders ...
shop keeper fails to see the problem with having opened topped cages....
flawed.... you fool! i have a mouse in my pocket as we speak...
if i was greedier i could have had 6 bunnies, chipmonks, puppies, kittens....
and all the cages were on the floor!!!
animals can jump.....
why why?????
pet shop an impulse buy was it ?

i am now going to catch the bus to the airport.
p.s i also got upgraded for some unknowm reason last night! u likeeee my flip flop plane attendant? they are so horrible they could be mistaken for some kind of ironic designer shoe line? desk faces impressed.... oooo rich nicely dressed lady.... upgrade her!
why?

night night

2\8

we had our last few hours in Munich smoke city,
we are moving on to Saltzburg, to stay with relatives.
we are both really excited about this.
hopefuly it is a city sponsered by flower sellers.
my throat is actually sore from breathing in so much smoke.
Munich is a pretty place but i really would not want to come here again because of the damage to my lungs.... its disgusting. .. smoke everywhere... as i type im breathing in some smoke from my fellow internet junkies. there must be a very high cancer rate here.

last night creative kira dyed some of her favourite clothes..... it looks good for a background in a play..... a swamp set perhaps.... merky green . i think it gives our web page a bad name ....
being seen on that back drop.

there are some exceptionally fluffy dogs here, beautiful huskys and wolves but also these foxes
gorgeous puff ball fluff with pointy noses and stick legs... they are so funny when i see them i laugh uncontrollaby... i have offended many dog owners.....

things i noticed about Munchen (Munich):
fruit is more expensive then ciggarettes. (as a snack) its very bad. ....
the water fountains spray u when u go past..... they are designed badly.
german girls have no individual style... they have all unified in looking uncool instead.
kiras style has been infected i think.... those pink trainers.,... the green dye...
there are no supermarkets, no food shops, only turkish minimarkets selling mainly olives and meat.

and my kneeeees what is happening to them?
they hurt all the time now. im not happy about this.
any suggestions please email me- i might be forced to stop cycling.
sin city is shown as an underground film....
art house??? how many art house films have 12 famous stars in?

i think the rain god has yeilded to my hail...... bless the god of water he serenades us today....

Monday, August 01, 2005

munich

kira has purchased some questionable trainers.....
i always thought she was a stylish girl......
oh dear.

its sunny again.... :)
we have been looking at the sights. .

looking forward to getting back on my bike.... walking is so slow....
and its better to be high up so u can see more.
my knees have not improved. i think i will swap knees with kira ...
she is a light sleeper though so any ideas get back to me.
thanks.
katrina.

clock land

.... nothing but large clocks.....
ding ding dingggggggggggggggg....

chaos at twelve,,

they were all on different times!.... ding ding dinnnng....
we saw a pretty clock with a rotating dance scene which im not sure how origional it could be on the front of a Gothic church..... so we sat on scaffolding watching that for ten minutes.
kira is an exceptional team leader, always sourcing the fun......

my knees are like rocks, grinding rocks. i think i may have damaged them, hopefully this is temporary.

after the recent storm its been cloudy, but very hot, horrendous conditions for cycling-
i prefer heavy rain to this. so a plee to the rain God.... more of that please, go away hotcloudyGod no one likes you.

im looking forward to Saltzburg.

we are putting some exciting pictures up soon.
very exciting.

but the highlight of the trip, today, we found a 'POTATOE MUSEUM'
we went straight to it...... expectations high, only to find it was closed-
why is everything closed on sunday in europe, dont they think of the money making possibilities...... people not at work... people want to buy things...... open the shops it makes sense. i will be thinking for a long time about what could have been inside that museum.....

p.s
things i have noticed about germany,
differences:
incredible playgrounds.... some of these ... wow...... huge swings the size of sofas,
some great activities to participate in, im putting up some pictures soon.
and its made me want to be a play ground designer ..... to make england a better place.

to cross the platform at the train station, (cycled passed lots following the tracks)
they have built paths which go along the tracks.... so no stairs! brilliant time saver if you were late.

the amount of smoking here is extreeme. id say at least one in four people can be seen carrying, holding, purchasing or throwing away ciggarettes, specifically marlboro.

things im missing :
areas of non smoking (you can smoke anywhere.... not nice to gulp in cloud of smoke when your cycling)
kira (she is over there.... i want to see her again!!!! )
piggy.... if anyone identifies a ridiculously cute pink pig please send him home.
my sunglasses...... i loved them, they were so perfect.
my normal knees....
and now im missing the potatoe museum..... i want too go back there even the sign was funny
four potatoes in differnt colours.... heheeheheeeeee

things

funny moments so far have been centered around kira asking for directions....
totally confusing the person she has targeted and then forgetting the second half of the instructions
this is the general pattern,
somtimes kira is ignored. she doesnt like this..... and says excuse me until they have run away.
other times the person blares out in differing languages before she can say she is english... or if she doesnt like them she is swedish (a language rarely spoken )

kiras new methods involve pointing to the map and smiling
it hs been succesful a few times-
once we even approached people in there house and a fruitseller who both proceeded to draw complex diagrams.
recently highlights have been:
when looking for a station to follow the track kira asked a small child where the `choooooo chooooooooooo' was, making aggressive gestures at the horrified child, perhaps there is a german folklaw choo choo demon we were culturaly ignorant to.

passing through germany we have uncovered a vastly structured highly developed Marlboro advertising campaign, everyone here seems to be sponsered by marlboro, chatting to us they pull out gleaming red packets , random people flashing the logo at us on the street and boxes scattered around on the floor. we think many models have been employed to be seen smoking the ciggarette, like cool trendy accesories, sponsored by marlboro to promote the brand to the masses. also billboard advertising has not been outlawed here so the logo is on posters and umbrellas everywhere- really unsettleing.

dangerous encounters with cars:
kira was cycling (or shall we say free wheeling) when a large vehicle (we have your registration so black mail money TBA) reversed into her leg leaving a horrendous gash and a huge swelling.
she did not show any pain- like samurai- really inspiring to watch.

i however was less note worthy, it was me who hit the car, it was coming very close to me and i didnt avoid it in time, so there was a collision in motion with the side of the car to the side of my bike, i did not fall to the side but continued cycling, i dont think the car noticed.

hot......
tired
...

we had so much grease on us from the bike chain.....
i asked for a room with marks all over my face....
it was the first time somone has looked at me with total revulsion....
and this was a ´friendly member of staff`...

camping by the dock was scary..... there was a main road and two paths next to us..,.,
a horific moment when a man walked past coughing in a growling wolf way
we didnt know how close he was ,.,.,., both of us jumped up in the green darkness of the tent
having no windows and being made of flimsy fabric,,,,, u realise how vulnerable u are.
grasping the bat.... waiting.... hoping he will move on....
thinking of immitating gruff sounding s.a.s action man voice----- no real plan
its really somthing to consider when u start a trip like this,,,,, if u scare easily you wont last long.

a few nights cycling in the dark have been really exciting, a few forest tracks
monster noises, heart beat rising, so you pick up a great speed and immagination runs wild....

we are doing well.

kira looks incredible.
